As usual there will be a lot small enhancements under the hood but also some bigger changes, that have been recorded by my collegue Perun. WordPress 3.9 is about to be released on April 15th 2014.

Why JPEG isn´t the right Format for your Web Logo

“Can I use a JPEG image for my weblogo” customers often ask me. “Well, you can but you shouldn´t” is my answer in most of the cases. Of course you can use a JPEG as a logo but it´s not the best choice in most of the cases. Here is why.

There is one big problem with JPEG images. They always have a (white) background. This might not be an issue if you have a white background on your website as well but what if you have a colored header? It looks awefull and unprofessional.

There are some other issues with JPEGs when it comes to scalability and quality. That´s why designers ask for EPS which is a vector based format also used for printing. Well, can I use that for the web you might ask. No but any designer can make a PNG file out of an EPS file in seconds. And PNG is a great image format for weblogos.

Take a look at this website for more details.

Movember is at the Gate – Our Team takes part again

Movember – the month formerly known as November – is all about bringing back the moustache, having fun, making a difference and create awareness for a serious topic.  Across the globe, Mo Bros commit to growing a moustache for the 30 days of Movember and become walking, talking billboards for the cause. The moustache is our ribbon, the symbol by which we generate conversations, awareness and raise funds for men’s health.

There are many ways to get involved, from growing a moustache to making a donation. Whilst we leave cultivating moustaches to the guys, Mo Sistas play a vital role in the success of Movember by raising funds and awareness, and by supporting the Mo Bros in their lives.

So take action and either register and become a Mo Bro or Mo Sista or open your wallet and donate some money to support this worldwide charity project.

Easy WordPress Theme Customizations with Tweaky

I love to provide outstanding support to my customers. If you purchase a high quality product such as one of my themes you can expect top notch support if you encounter an issue. That´s part of my philosophy.

Sometimes though I have customers who’s individual needs exceed what is considered “normal” support. This is what I call individual customizations which are not part of the normal support and are only available for an extra fee. Somtimes these little things need to be done quite quickly but I´m right in the middle of a bigger project and simply don´t have the time to provide quick help. Today I´m more than happy to announce a partnership with a new service called Tweaky that lets you have a professional make changes to your site in a very affordable way and at a reasonable price.

Now this doesn’t change the way I´m supporting my valued customers with theme questions. I´m still doing that. An I will always do that. But for customizations that are beyond theme support, Tweaky is a fantastic partner to help you out.

The process is very straigh forward. Essentially you fill in a quote form and their developers bid on your project. The service even comes with a Money Back Guarantee so you have nothing to risk.

If you’d like to get started, you can fill in this  form and they will get in touch with you shortly.

Issues with my Mailform – Can´t reply to some E-Mails

If you wrote me an email via my contact form between some time yesterday November 22nd and today before 16:00 h I will not be able to reply if you haven´t entered your email also  into the message field.

The reason is that my server for some reason ignored the senders email and used my own email adress as the senders email. So I received two messages via my contactform – one concerning issues with the checkout and an inquiry from a German teacher – where I don´t have an email adress to reply.

If you are one of these people you should write me an email again either by using the contact form (which works again) or using the email adress support [AT] der-prinz.com.

Please accept my appologies for this inconvenience.

Seems like the ghost in the machine wants to play tricks on me these days 😉

Social Media Break is over

End of August I started my social media break because of two reasons. First I wanted to have some more time – time that I normally spend on social media activities. And secondly I wanted to see what difference it make if I´m active on Facebook, Twitter & Co. or not. Today I´m back to social media and guess what: I didn´t miss very much.

Of course I was not completely locked off. I was still reading several RSS feeds to stay informed and was kind of active on XING which is a bit outstanding from the crowd because it´s clearly business focused. There were some times when I really missed to be an active part of the social media plattforms and that was when I was looking for the one or the other solution. Normally I post a question on Google+, Twitter and also on Facebook and normally I get an answer qite quickly. This time I had to find other sources and that was in fact not a real problem. Aunt Google finds a solution for almost anything 😉

The Results

Interesting about it is that the number of followers/friends/fans or whatever you like to cal the people who you are connected to on the various plattforms didn´t decrease. In fact it slightly increased although I dindn´t write anything during this time.

Before/After

Twitter: 352 / 357
Facebook Page: 86 / 89
Google+: 109  / 138

The Conclusion

My simple conclusion is that beeing part of the social media community it nice but not crucial for me. In some cases it´s quite helpful but you can´t expect any miracles from it. For a one-man-show like me who can´t spend too much time on a fancy social media strategy it doesn´t seem to be the big thing.  So of course I will continue my social media experience but I will spend less time and effort on it. I guess for me it´s more important to focus on my core business and produce more outstanding WordPress themes and great websites for my clients. Social media to me is one part of my personal marketing but it´s by far not the most important and it´s not the “healer for all diseases”. Producing good quality in my clients work and word-of-mouth from satisfied customers is much more valuable.

TimThumb Vulnerability Scanner

I´m sure you are aware of the latest TimThumb vulnerability issue that has been reported a few weeks ago. I provided an update for the script that is used in my themes and makes thumbnail handling so easy. Of course all PRiNZ themes were updated to make sure they are not effected anymore.

Today I stumbled over an article at Codegarage who offers a WordPress plugin that alows you to scan all of your wp-content directory for old versions of TimThumb and – if it finds any – replace them by the latest (safe) version. It´s simple, easy and effective. Try it and make your WordPress site a little safer.
