Using images on the homepage of BranfordMagazine
The use of images in BranfordMagazine is as easy as 1, 2, 3. Just write your article, upload an image, publish it and you´re done. You don´t even need to insert the image inside the article.
Just uploading, that´s all. Just make sure the folder “script” inside the themesfolder, its subfolder “cache” and the .htaccess file are writable by the server. If not user your favorite FTP client and set the proper rights (CHMOD 777). If you don´t know how that works search in google and find thousands of tutorials explaining that.
Also make sure you use the uploader within the write post panel and not the general media library because this will not work without an additional step. An image always needs to be attached to the article. As of WordPress 2.9 you can attach any image from the media library to a post. Just klick on the “Attach” link below the image in the media library (WP admin “Media > Library”) and select the post you like to attach it. An image that already has been attached to a post or page cannot be attached to another.
This is a step-by-step manual in pictures (Click to enlarge):
Click “add image”
Select image(s) from you computer
Select image
Close the uploader window after the image has been uploaded (this is not the right image, sorry)
Save/publish the post. Done!
Order of images and visibility
The Tim Thumb imagehandling-script always pics the first image that has been attached to an article and displays it. Again: It is not relevant if the image is inserted into the post or not. The script doesn´t care if the attached image or any other image is placed inside the article or not. Nor does it care for the order images are placed inside an article. The only relevant order is the order of the post-gallery where the image was uploaded.
Example
You write an article, click on “Upload/Insert > add an image” and upload image1.jpg to the article´s gallery. In this case image1.jpg is displayed e.g in the leadarticle-teaser on the homepage. Now you upload image2.jpg and insert it into the article. Still image1.jpg is displayed on the homepage whilst image2.jpg is displayed inside the article.
You can change this by switching the order of the uploaded images. click on “Upload/Insert > add an image”. Open the “Gallery” tab and you will see the order of your images. Now you can drag&drop the image order. The “first” image in the way WordPress handles it is the one at the very bottom of the list of images.

Is there a method to use a slideshow with the Lead Story? I’ve installed NextGen Gallery, but no image is displayed with the Lead Article. If I click Continue Reading, I get the slideshow.

I’ve tried all these steps, but still can’t get the image to load. Are there any additional suggestions?
Thank you,
Matt

So in this version you no longer have to use custom fields for the special images on the homepage?

No. That job is done by the script.
